Yatra.com, one of India’s earliest online travel platforms, has embarked on an unexpected yet strategic transformation — expanding from being a travel booking giant into the world of EdTech. Co-founded by Sabina Chopra and Mohit Saini, Yatra began in 2006 as a user-friendly travel marketplace, revolutionizing how Indians booked flights, hotels, and holidays.
By 2025, with India’s travel industry stabilizing post-pandemic and new opportunities emerging in skill development, Yatra diversified into education technology, offering online programs in partnership with universities and professional institutes. This move reflects the company’s long-term vision: to connect not only people and places but also careers and learning opportunities.
A Journey of Reinvention
Yatra’s pivot came at a time when many travel startups were struggling to regain pre-pandemic momentum. Instead of merely reviving its core operations, Yatra sought sustainable diversification. Through its new vertical, the company now provides online upskilling programs, including courses in digital marketing, business management, and data analytics, enabling professionals to learn from anywhere — much like how travelers explore destinations globally.
This initiative is part of Yatra Online Ltd., which got listed on Indian stock exchanges in 2023, strengthening its capital base. The EdTech venture aims to serve both individuals and corporates, aligning with India’s booming skilling ecosystem, projected to reach $700 million by 2030.
Tech Meets Travel
The company’s digital-first DNA made the transition smoother. Yatra’s robust technological infrastructure, AI-based personalization, and trusted user base gave it an edge in launching an education platform with a ready audience of 12 million+ users.
According to Sabina Chopra, the goal is to “extend Yatra’s philosophy of exploration — from travel destinations to educational journeys.” The EdTech move not only opens new revenue streams but also aligns with Yatra’s core value: empowering people through meaningful experiences.
Driving Future Growth
Yatra’s education arm complements its existing travel services, especially for corporate clients. Through its B2B partnerships, it plans to integrate travel management with corporate training programs, creating an end-to-end ecosystem that supports both business travel and employee learning.
In FY25, Yatra recorded ₹400 crore in revenue, with the education segment contributing steadily since its pilot launch. Analysts see the move as a smart hedge — leveraging brand recognition to build relevance beyond travel.
A Model for Modern Indian Startups
Yatra.com’s journey symbolizes how Indian startups are evolving with time — from single-sector businesses to multi-domain innovators. By blending travel, technology, and education, Yatra not only secures its future but also sets a precedent for startups to adapt to changing consumer aspirations.
As Sabina Chopra aptly summarizes: “Exploration doesn’t end with travel — it continues through learning.”
